Ramu Avala is a doctoral researcher in the department of Geography, as a researcher I’m focusing on the Port-led development along the Indian coast and its impact on fishing communities. I was previously associated with the Fish Workers Federation (National Platform for Small Scale Fish Workers) and am currently volunteering for fishers' unions, advocating for their rights. I am also interested in critical caste studies, particularly in South India, and the role of caste in the political economy of coastal states such as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. On a personal level, I advocate for social justice movements and the protection of minority and Indigenous tribes' land rights.
Research Interests: Blue Economy, Social Justice-Exclusion, Critical Caste-Class theories, Democratic Backsliding, Authoritarian regimes, Power and Land relations.
Funding: QMUL Principal's Postgraduate Research studentship.
