Floreat Salopia! Globe goes to Shrewsbury
Like so many migrants, East London was Platun’s parent’s first port of call. They subsequently moved to Bayston Hill, a village on the outskirts of Shrewsbury, where she was born and spent the first 15 years of her life.
Interestingly Shrewsbury’s MP, Daniel Kawczynski, is a Polish immigrant who arrived in the UK as a child. He was the first British MP born in Poland.
In Old English the town was known as Scrobbesburh; meaning either "Scrobb's fort" or "the fortified place in the bushes". Its later Welsh name Amwythig means "fortified place". The town is defended by the loop of the River Severn as well as being positioned on a hill.
Working in partnership with Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, Globe travelled around the towns mediaeval streets, visiting the Castle, rolling up Wyle Cop, Pride Hill and along the extensive town walls. Throughout, Globe engaged people in conversations about where they feel they belong or do not belong.
