Rolling from the National Maritime Museum to Torridon School
Globe oscillates east and west along the Meridian Line.
As we rolled Globe past two Czech students sitting directly at the Meridian Line, we asked ‘Do you feel you belong to the east or the west?’ One replied ‘It depends on what stage I am in my life. Sometimes I feel home in Asia, sometimes I feel home in Europe and sometimes I just feel I need to completely go to a different country.’ The other simply said ‘The west’.
We slowly rolled up Observation Hill. After catching our breath we continued through Greenwich Park, the ground littered with the fruit of Chestnut trees. We made our way over the flats of Blackheath and under the train tracks at Hither Green before arriving at our destination; Torridon School located on Longitude 0º.
Our GPS logged our route as we crossed the line back and forth. Occasionally we saw marks or traces of the invisible line made visible by a sculpture, plaque or a diagonally painted trail.
The next day, with Globe present in the centre of the hall, we held globe-making workshops with the children who had watched it arrive.
