How to Apply

The School of History at Queen Mary, University of London is an exciting, friendly, diverse community of scholars, which stretches from first year undergraduates to senior professors.

We give careful consideration to every application to join that community.

Application process

To apply for a Masters (MA) at the School of History, you’ll need to complete a form on the Queen Mary website.

If you are unable to access the online form or would prefer to submit a paper application, please contact the Admissions team.

The Admissions team will also be able to help with advice, or if you have any difficulty using the online application form.

International applicants

International applicants are welcome to contact one of our authorised local representatives for assistance with making an application.

They will guide you through the application process and can upload online documents, or scan and send your completed paper application form direct to Queen Mary. They do not charge for their services.

Supporting documentation

Before applying you will need to ensure you have the following documents:

  • Degree transcripts
    If you have not yet completed your degree please provide a transcript of your results achieved to date

  • One suitable reference (we resevre the right to request a second reference where the first is not satisfactory).

Please provide one reference from your previous academic institution on headed paper. If you have left university it is usually acceptable to provide an alternative, suitable employee reference.

  • Proof of English language ability for international applicants from non-English speaking countries

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  • Statement of purpose

  • Your statement of purpose should explain why you want to study your chosen programme and how it will help your life and career. This should typically be one side of A4 paper.

  • Applicants to our MA History programme should indicate in the statement which field of study you are most interested in pursuing for the Mastering the Field module and your dissertation, and explain why you are interested in this field.

International applicants

In addition to the documents listed above, international applicants should provide evidence of English language ability (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL).

Support and advice

We appreciate that undertaking an MA is a large financial commitment. If you have any queries about financial matters our fantastic Advice and Counselling team are on hand to assist.

Both applicants and students have access to their services.

If you are a UK applicant, you may be entitled to financial assistance from Directgov’s Student Finance(link is external) service.

If you are an international applicant, the UKCISA(link is external) website is a great source of advice. They can provide you with a range of information, from what it’s like living and studying in the UK to a budget calculator to help you stay on top of your finances.

What happens after you apply?

Admissions Tutors will consider your completed application form. Providing you have included all the required documentation, we aim to inform you of a decision on your application within four weeks of receipt.
