World-leading academics

Our academics are pioneering researchers and dedicated teachers in equal measure.

We are proud to have brilliant, passionate lecturers at the School of Economics and Finance – many of whom are world-leading researchers who are changing the world for the better. Their research feeds directly into their teaching, meaning that you will benefit from the latest industry knowledge and insights during your regular classroom time.

Dr Andrea Tesei, for example, teaches on modules such as Applied Econometrics and Political Economy, and was recently interviewed by The Washington Post about his research on the effects that TV has on political voting. He found that individuals who are exposed to entertainment TV as children are more vulnerable to populist preferences, and this has informed the ongoing debate on the rise of populist parties.

Specialising in political economy and economic development, Dr Tesei is driven by a profound interest in the forces shaping modern societies which he is keen to pass on to his students. He encourages lively debate in his classes, and finds that students bring fresh ideas to important debates and look at issues from a new perspective. He will encourage you undertake challenging tasks and find ingenious solutions to difficult problems.

Meanwhile, Francesca Cornaglia’s research on shared decision making is closely linked to the modules that she teaches: Health Economics and Economics of Social Issues. With a wider range of treatment options available to patients over the past few decades, they are increasingly asked to play an active role in deciding their treatment, and her research implies that there is an increasing need for healthcare decisions to be taken more openly and with better information.
