As precarious as the present Corona/Covid-19 situation is it was a German philosopher, Ernst Bloch (1885-1977), who developed in the 1960s his thoughts on The Principle of Hope (“Das Prinzip Hoffnung”). Corona is likely to become the life-changer of our time to which we need to respond constructively. By opting for intensive and challenging studies in languages you will be doing precisely that.
One of the finest German-language poets in the second half of the 20th Century, Paul Celan (1920-1970) wrote a famous poem under the title ‘Corona’. At the time when he wrote it this very word was distinctly less infamous. It reads as follows:
Aus der Hand frißt der Herbst mir sein Blatt: wir sind Freunde. Wir schälen die Zeit aus den Nüssen und lehren sie gehn: die Zeit kehrt zurück in die Schale.
Im Spiegel ist Sonntag, im Traum wird geschlafen, der Mund redet wahr.
Mein Aug steigt hinab zum Geschlecht der Geliebten: wir sehen uns an, wir sagen uns Dunkles, wir lieben einander wie Mohn und Gedächtnis, wir schlafen wie Wein in den Muscheln, wie das Meer im Blutstrahl des Mondes.
Wir stehen umschlungen im Fenster, sie sehen uns zu von der Straße: es ist Zeit, daß man weiß! Es ist Zeit, daß der Stein sich zu blühen bequemt, daß der Unrast ein Herz schlägt. Es ist Zeit, daß es Zeit wird.

As Celan’s dates suggest, we are celebrating the centenary of his birth this year and commemorating the 50th anniversary of his death. Enjoy the richness of German culture by also considering that 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of three embodiments of this culture and the sheer presence and eminent relevance of what they had to say: the poet Friedrich Hölderlin, the philosopher Georg W.F. Hegel, and the composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Experience the world of Hölderlin in the documentary produced by arte TV (German-French culture channel), where you will also meet Daniela Danz, a contemporary author who was in 2017 Writer-in-residence in our Department.
