Student View: Procrastination
For those of you that Procrastinate- a little helper
Are you someone who completes long days’ worth of assignments in just under an hour? Or someone who is well known for just-on-time handed in assignments with messy structure, missing coversheet, wrong assignment submitted and forgotten student ID?
If yes, then there is a problem, you have clearly gone wrong somewhere. Your time management skills may be… seriously dormant.
Procrastination is when you delay doing a task, assignment or revision because you are too busy distracting yourself with other, non work-related stuff. The tasks you are supposed to complete which are often procrastinated on tend to be tedious, not really entertaining and sometimes require the most effort. For example, house chores, cleaning and doing assignments.
There’s a lack of motivation, energy, and concentration – combined with a fear of failure. For this reason it’s easier to procrastinate. But the consequences are never pleasant, because you may end up building on even worse habits; like working late, rushing to finish your assignment a day before – or even an hour before it is due.
This will only result in you feeling even more at the peak of high stress levels.
So, what I have done for you is gathered five key solutions/techniques to avoid procrastination:
Firstly, accept that you do procrastinate! Then..
Make a tasks list
You can organize your to-do-list whatever way you want; ranking them according to difficulty, by how long the assignment will take or by deadlines. By doing this you will be able to cross out each assignment as you complete them, resulting in a feeling of success and fulfilment. This will be your trigger to get things done!
Remove all distractions
This includes; phone, TV, certain people, food or games.
Give yourself a sensible time limit
But, ensure you are still doing your finest work and not rushing, because rushing is never a good idea. By planning within a sensible time limit, you learn better time management skills, organise your ideas better and finish tasks within time slots.
Reward yourself when finished
The fun part is the reward, of course! For example, you could treat yourself to a movie or an episode of your favourite TV show after finishing your assignment. This will then allow you to think of completing tasks beforehand in a more positive way.
