He works closely with faculty, Trusts and national regulators (GMC, OfS) on all aspects of Quality assurance and enhancement of our teaching programmes. He has previously led on our engagement with NSS, where, in 2021, medicine once again came first in London for student satisfaction.He has responsibility for Research Facilitation and has previously supervised students on the Medical Professionalism programme and convened problem-based seminars on various MBBS and Physician Associate modules (Applied Medical and Social Sciences, Brain and Behaviour, Human Development).He also serves on: School of Medicine and Dentistry Anti-racism Steering committee (winner of 2020 President and Principal's prize) Queen Mary Race Equality Action Group Queen Mary Co-Chair of Understanding and Celebrating Race and Ethnicity Working Group Queen Mary Ethics of Research committee (Co-Chair of Panel B) Since 2020, Shahrar has served as EDI Lead for IHSE. Before coming to QMUL, Shahrar managed regional research centres at SOAS (China, Japan, Korea, South Asia, South East Asia) and led internationalisation and fellowships programmes at the School of Advanced Study, University of London. He has taught moral philosophy, medical ethics and professional ethics, at Birkbeck and other HEIs, and was external examiner for co-curricular studies at Imperial. Shahrar has degrees in biochemical engineering and philosophy and a PhD from UCL on the morality of lying and deception. He worked in the European Parliament Science and Technology Options Assessment Unit on GM risk regulation and holds qualifications in leadership and management from the Chartered Management Institute.In 2022, Shahrar was awarded Postgraduate Certificate of Academic Practice (with distinction) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.Research
