Lunchtime ECR Paper Discussion with Dr Venâncio Ramos Jr

An internal  lunchtime discussion for QMUL early career researchers with IHSS Visiting Fellow Dr Dernival Venâncio Ramos Jr., Federal University of the North of Tocantins (UFNT), Brazil, in collaboration with Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CRoLAC)

This lunchtime event will give QMUL ECRs the opportunity for informal discussion with Visiting IHSS Fellow Dr Venâncio Ramos, centred on a reading of his article ‘Mapping fire: cases from Matopiba’ (IDS Bulletin, 2023). This article examines fire as a political tool to advance the expansion of the agricultural frontier in Brazil, and explores the authors’ use of satellite imagery and participatory research methodologies to support resistance to this trend among community members and activists in Black rural communities in Matopibato.

Dr Dernival Venâncio Ramos Júnior is an Associate Professor of History at the Federal University of the North of Tocantins (UFNT), Brazil, and an IHSS Visiting Fellow (November 2024). His work explores socio-environmental conflict, political resistance in traditional communities in the Southern Amazon and the expansion of Brazil’s agri-food frontier. He co-directs the Centre of Research and External Engagement in Agroecological Knowledge and Practices (NEUZA) - an interdisciplinary research centre which works closely with Brazil’s Pastoral Land Commission and other social movements.
