This year we continue to recognise International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month throughout March with an exciting programme of events and activities.
This year, the theme for International Women’s Day is #InspireInclusion, which encourages everyone to recognize the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life, including those from marginalized communities.
At Queen Mary we have a long standing commitment to progressing gender equality; in 2022 we successfully retained our Institutional Athena Swan Silver award in recognition of the University's continued commitment to advancing gender equality and the progress we have achieved. We have since launched our Institutional Gender Impact Plan (2022-2027) and are already making progress implementing the actions we have committed to. You can view our Institutional Gender Impact Plan (2022-2027) here.
Recognising the gendered impact of caring responsibilities, we are proud to have launched a new Carers Career Development Fund earlier this year. This fund provides financial support to enable parents/guardians and carers to attend career-development events outside of their normal working hours.
The University’s Staff Gender Equality Network launched in 2023 and provides voice, opportunity and connection. The Network is open to all staff with an interest in progressing gender equality. Colleagues can join a network by joining the individual network’s MS Team (Gender Equality Staff Network)
International Women’s Day is an annual celebration of the history and achievements of women as well as an important reminder of the need to take action to progress gender equality. This year, the theme is #InspireInclusion, recognising that when we value and understand women’s inclusion, there is a sense of belonging, relevance and empowerment. I am looking forward to the exciting programme of events and activities taking place across Queen Mary this year to celebrate this event. Queen Mary has a long-standing commitment to progressing gender equality; this year we are focused on enhancing our support for carers, continuing to review and improve our approaches to reward and recognition and considering ambitious new interventions to increase the rate of progress towards gender balance. We remain committed to closing our gender pay gaps and increasing the representation of women at senior levels in line with the aims of Strategy 2030. I am proud of the continued progress Queen Mary us making towards becoming the most inclusive university of our kind, anywhere. I encourage you to take a look at our fantastic programme of events and activities; International Women’s Day is for everyone – get involved! Louise Lester, Director of Human Resources
