Additional opportunities eligible for funding

Queen Mary University has assessed and chosen the below partner universities' summer schools as affordable, accessible and desirable options when compared across all offerings. In the application form, you can apply for GO Summer! funding (GO Summer! Bursary and if applicable, Turing Scheme funding) to support your participation in the below eligible summer school opportunities. Applicants must follow the application instructions as detailed below on this webpage.

Find out more about the individual countries and destinations, costs, and total potential maximum funding below. Costs quoted do not include travel to/from the host country, so bear this in mind when budgeting (yet funding available from Queen Mary may offset this, so consult the available funding carefully as well).

Students qualifying in priority groups (1) or (2) are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as those applications will be reviewed and processed on a semi-rolling basis, periodically every 3 weeks (approximately) up through the deadline. Available funding will be allocated throughout the application period to these students first whose applications are successful, and funding will be allocated to other students where remaining.

Final application deadline: Wednesday 03 April 2024, 12 noon (local UK time). Late/incomplete applications will not be considered.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at summerschool@qmul.ac.uk.

Costs

We have included estimated costs for each programme to help your decision making, listed in the local currency. Please note these costs are only estimates and may be subject to change depending on course availability, housing choices etc. We do not guarantee that these costs are inclusive of 100% of the costs you might incur; please ensure you have checked the partner's own summer school website (links are provided under each description) and perform your own cost calculations, also taking into mind additional costs you might have depending on your individual situation. If your nationality would also require you to obtain a visa for your destination country, you would also need to consider this as an additional cost in your budgeting.

Funding

Total maximum potential funding available from Queen Mary for each opportunity is also provided as a guideline, to help you ascertain how affordable each opportunity might be for you, dependent on your circumstances and for which priority group you may qualify. Bear in mind that the timeline of receiving funding may not be aligned with when you may need to make a payment for any costs. Please contact summerschool@qmul.ac.uk with any concerns.

How to apply

  • Ensure you have read the eligibility section on the GO Summer! landing page to ensure you can apply and that you understand the terms and conditions of the available funding streams.
  • Carefully read all of the below instructions and information on this page before submitting any application.
  • You need to carefully review the information relating to your preferred summer school opportunity - part of the personal statement is to tell us what and why you want to study your preferred course at that preferred summer school and what academic and personal benefits you will gain from it.
  • Apply for funding from Queen Mary via the Global Opportunities (GO) team internally with this application form for funding for eligible opportunities - we advise that you prepare your personal statement in advance (see requirements in the "Selection timeline and criteria" section on the GO Summer! page)
  • Directly after submitting the online application form, you must submit your official transcript of records by email to summerschool@qmul.ac.uk  within 1 day of submitting the online application form or at the very latest by the application deadline - whichever comes first. The transcript should be a PDF of your HEAR. Only if you are only in year 1, please instead upload a screenshot of your provisional results for the current academic year from your MySIS account, as the HEAR is not yet available to you (all other students must upload their HEAR).
  • No application will be reviewed or considered for any funding until an official transcript is received.
  • Optional: If you have already applied to your preferred partner university's summer school (not mandatory at the time of applying for GO Summer! funding from Queen Mary via the GO team), you may also email confirmation of your acceptance letter/email from them to summerschool@qmul.ac.uk. If you decide to apply to the partner in advance of your funding application to the GO team, this is at your discretion. Some students choose to do this where they are concerned that a popular course at one of the below universities may potentially fill up and therefore wish to apply early to secure a space. If you do this, bear in mind that you may be asked to pay non-refundable costs as part of the partner's application process. The decision of whether or not to apply to the partner in advance or to submit such evidence in advance will not affect the outcome of your application now with the GO team; however, it is useful for the GO team to know for next steps, please see below (if your application is successful, you will need to apply to the partner soon afterwards).
  • When reviewing applications, the GO team will contact you if you must send applicable supporting documentation (relevant for qualifying in a certain priority group). Where requested, this documentation must be sent to summerschool@qmul.ac.uk within 3 business days in order to be considered for that priority group.

Successful funding applications, next steps

If and once you learn that your application is successful, you would receive a conditional funding offer. You then must complete all of the below within 3 business days of receiving the outcome from the GO team in order to remain eligible:

  • Apply to the agreed partner university's summer school (if you haven't already done so)
  • Email the GO team at summerschool@qmul.ac.uk the PDF of your confirmation of acceptance letter/email for the agreed summer school (or at the very least, confirmation of application) from the agreed partner university (if you have not already done so).

By submitting an application and if you are successful, you agree to follow the published procedure to complete the above steps and understand that failure to do so may result in your conditional funding offer being withdrawn.

Unsuccessful applications

You will be informed of the outcome of your GO Summer! funding application according to the selection timeline section on this page. If the Global Opportunities team is unable to provide you with financial support for your preferred summer school, you may decide if you still wish to participate in that summer school without GO Summer! funding. Bear in mind that you would be responsible for any costs you have already incurred relative to any application you may have already completed with the partner university.
