The Queen Mary Centre for Law and Society in a Global Context and Criminal Justice Centre are pleased to co-present the launch of Dr Tanzil Chowdhury’s Time, Temporality and Legal Judgment (Routledge, 2020).
In this book, Tanzil Chowdhury offers a provocative challenge to prevailing theories of judicial fact construction. He provides an alternative account of judicial fact construction through the concept of ‘adjudicative temporalities’: legally produced times that structure the formation of legal subjects and events in legal judgments.
The development of this theory has consequences for our thinking about various aspects of legal practice. Focussing on criminal law in particular, Chowdhury argues that the deployment of certain adjudicative temporalities has a bearing on the question: to whom does criminal law ascribe responsibility? More broadly, by demonstrating that legal adjudication either includes or elides certain social structures in its determination of facts, Chowdhury demonstrates another way in which to uncover the politics of legal judgment, as well as its transformative potential.
This book will be of interest to students and scholars in the field of legal judgment, criminal law and, legal philosophy.
Dr Tanzil Chowdhury is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Public Law at Queen Mary University of London’s School of Law and the Co-Director for the Centre of Law and Society in a Global Context.
