In an opinion piece for Al Jazeera, Neve Gordon, Professor of International Law and Human Rights at Queen Mary, discusses Israel’s controversial use of Palestinian civilians as “human shields” during military operations in Gaza.

According to Professor Gordon, Israeli troops forcibly dress Palestinian civilians in military uniforms and deploy them into dangerous areas, transforming them from vulnerable individuals into tools for drawing enemy fire.
“By dressing Palestinian civilians in military garb and sending them into the tunnels, the Israeli military has, in effect, altered the very logic of human shielding. Indeed, human shielding has historically been predicted on recognising that the person shielding a military target is a civilian (or prisoner of war),” he says.
