Welcome

Congratulations on your offer of study for the LLM in Paris with Queen Mary University of London, or the Sorbonne-Queen Mary Double LLM. We are looking forward to welcoming you in Paris on the 13 January 2020.

Visa letter

Please note: If you require a visa to study in France, and have not yet requested a visa letter from us, please contact us immediately. If you do not require a visa letter, but require an official letter for other purposes, please email: llm-paris@qmul.ac.uk.

Please remember that you will need an Unconditional Offer which has been accepted, in order to enrol.

The following information is designed to prepare you for pre-enrolment and Induction.

Important documents:

Induction agenda [PDF 821KB]

It is a requirement that you attend the induction from 13-16 January. As you will see, it is essential that you formally enrol, as well as join the information sessions, so that you are prepared for your time as a student with us. Please note the Agenda is still subject to change until published for Induction.

Module descriptions [PDF 740KB]

This document contains information about the modules that will be offered during your academic year. Please take the time to review the document carefully as you will be required to choose your modules for the year during the induction period. It is useful to have at least an idea of which modules you intend to study across the year, so that you can make the most of the opportunity to hear more about the modules and discuss your plans with the Convenors and fellow students during Induction.

Opening Lecture January 2020 - Information available soom

We will be holding the Opening Lecture for students on Monday 13 January and expect all new students to attend as it is a great opportunity to meet your fellow students across intakes and specialisms, as well as friends and associates of the programme. It is helpful for us if you register in advance, but we will work on the assumption that you will all attend.

Joining instructions and practical info [PDF 982KB]

You may have received this document already, but here it is again in case not. Please note that if you have not already done so, you will be hearing soon from the Admissions Office about pre-enrolment. Further details are in this document, and please be sure to login to MySIS and pre-enrol before the start of term. Also provided is some helpful information regarding Moving to Paris guide [PDF 1,437KB], kindly produced by our partners at ULIP.

Critical Thinking and Writing in Law

Details of the Critical Thinking and Writing in Law resources and teaching will be provided during Induction. This is an academic and legal English language support programme, which runs alongside the LLM at no extra cost, and focuses on academic writing skills, research methodology, dissertation and proposal writing, and critical and analytical skills, amongst other things.

For some students, this class is mandatory, and for others it is optional, but we find that the majority of students take this class in any case, at it is a very useful resource. If this course is included in the terms of your offer, then please note the teaching dates in the Module Calendar. You will be required to attend all 6 classes for your intake. Even if not a requirement of your offer, we strongly recommend the CTWL classes to all students.

Introduction to Common Law and the English Legal System lectures

We are very pleased to announce that Professor Sir Bernard Rix will be coming to Paris to offer classes introducing Common Law and the English Legal System. These are not compulsory, but strongly recommended, particularly for those whose background is not in Common Law. We will work on the assumption that you will all attend. You will be asked to confirm attendance of these classes at Induction.

Late arrival

Students are required to make every effort to be in Paris for the official enrolment and induction period. Students who cannot enrol on the dates indicated above or attend induction events for any reason must contact the CCLS Paris team as soon as possible. Please email cclsparis@qmul.ac.uk with the heading “Late Enrolment Enquiry”.

Late enrolment must be agreed in advance and good reason given. Late enrolment is only permitted for a limited period and at the discretion of the Programme Director. Any student having difficulties must contact us to discuss this. Specific late enrolment dates and advice will then be given.

We advise against starting your degree in this manner, as the induction period is vital for gathering information on modules and other resources, in order to make an informed choice and to be prepared for your studies with us in Paris. Therefore, it is important that if you are going to be unavoidably late, you arrive as soon as possible so that you can optimise the time available.

Option of Distance Learning modules

Certain of CCLS’ Distance Learning modules in Technology, Media & Telecommunications Law are available to LLM in Paris students. Further details will be given at Induction, or please contact us for more information: llm-paris@qmul.ac.uk.
