What influenced your decision to choose a LLM at Queen Mary?

When applying and choosing universities, my main aim was to find a program that I wanted to study. However, a crucial point was also the international reputation and ranking of the university where I would study. Additionally, friends and colleagues – alumni of the university who had previously studied at QMUL – recommended it as a desirable university with solid reviews. In that sense, QMUL, as an acknowledged member of the Russell Group, which is well-positioned internationally, gave me the confidence to apply for my LLM studies. Overall, it was an excellent choice and opportunity.

How did you find the teaching and learning?

The process of teaching and learning at QMUL was incredibly engaging and intellectually stimulating, with a teaching staff that exemplified professionalism and expertise. I was fortunate to attend all the lectures, each delivered by distinguished professors who brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom. It was an extraordinary experience to meet and learn from professors whose books and academic contributions had previously significantly shaped my understanding of the field. Their insights and perspectives added immense value to the learning experience, making my time at QMUL both enriching and memorable.

What was key about your programme/ were there any highlights?

I studied the LLM in Environmental Law, and the program offered a variety of appealing lectures and lecturers, as well as visiting professionals. Through these lectures, I became familiar with the ongoing challenges on the global stage and gained awareness of the numerous international institutions based in London. I am pleased to say that, as a QMUL student, I had the unique opportunity to attend the 80th session at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), where the Strategy on the Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships was adopted. That week was an exceptional and invaluable experience for me.

What did you enjoy about living in London whilst studying at CCLS?

London is a vibrant city full of opportunities. What I most liked about studying at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) was its proximity to the Strand, the Royal Courts of Justice, and the Inns of Court. It was the opportunity of a lifetime to attend events organized by the barristers' chambers and the Inns of Court, as well as to observe hearings at the Royal Courts of Justice. These experiences were invaluable, providing firsthand insight into the legal profession and the workings of the judicial system.

Did you learn alongside and are you still in touch with classmates from other legal jurisdictions around the world?  How did this add to your experience?

Absolutely. The friendships I made at QMUL will last a lifetime. I am incredibly happy to have had the chance to study in such a diverse environment, with colleagues from all over the globe. We stay in touch on a daily basis, and I am very grateful for these lasting connections. The diverse perspectives and cultures I encountered enriched my educational experience and broadened my worldview.

Has gaining a deeper understanding of your specialisation helped your career?

The teaching during my specialization has undoubtedly enhanced my knowledge, providing me with a solid foundation in Environmental Law. After completing the LLM, I feel significantly more confident in my ability to engage with and address complex issues within my area of specialization. The rigorous coursework, combined with expert instruction and real-world applications, has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding and the critical skills necessary to excel in my field. This experience has prepared me to tackle the challenges ahead and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of environmental law.
