What influenced your decision to study at Queen Mary?

It was whilst researching the top-ranking universities in London in my interest area of interest that I realized Queen Mary was the obvious choice for me with its stellar QS rankings, distinguished professors, cultural diversity and wide array of modules offered. Being a member of the coveted Russell Group was the cherry on top!

How did you find the teaching and learning?

The classes here are engaging, effective and interactive! I come from a country with a different teaching method and was not sure as to how I would adjust. But the professors are exceptionally helpful and encourage discussions, and I adapted in no time! Every class teaches you something new about the subject, but also improves one’s personal, oratory and presentation skills.

What was key about your programme/ were there any highlights?

The modules I chose were primarily related to Environmental Law, and there were several highlights. Firstly, numerous classes were role playing ones where the students were expected to come up with practical solutions for current environmental issues. Secondly, CCLS conducted several networking events with global law firms and organizations which is always a good way to connect with like-minded people. As a part of the Queen Mary Environmental Society, we’ve conducted Climate Action Conferences with colleges such as KCL, Imperial and UCL. In short, there’s never a dull day with any programme you take!

Did you combine modules across specialisations, where available, and if so, what were the advantages of this?

By opting for a General LLM, I had the liberty to choose across all specializations. Since my interest primarily lies in Environmental & Energy and Climate Change law, I could combine modules from both streams to have a deeper comprehension of both laws since they are interconnected. Animal Law, Media and Culture is a unique module offered at CCLS that combines both IP and TMT Law!

What did you enjoy about living in London whilst studying at CCLS?

London’s fusion of diverse culture (not to forget, it secured the top spot under QS Best Student Cities 2023), fused with its vibrant night life, makes it the best city for students! The city offers everything: from world renowned museums and Sunday markets to streets full of global cuisine cafes! I enjoyed weekend trips to places like Canterbury, Bath and Bristol, all a train ride away!

Did you learn alongside and are you still in touch with classmates from other legal jurisdictions around the world?  How did this add to your experience?

Part of the reason why I chose QMUL was because of its rich varied culture! Becoming colleagues with people from Turkey, Sweden, China and so many more jurisdictions is probably one of my favourite experiences here! There is so much learn about culture and jurisprudence that it results in a major holistic development!

Has gaining a deeper understanding of your specialisation helped your career?

Most definitely, gaining in-depth knowledge about a particular field you are passionate about is always a smart career move! There are multiple networking opportunities where ideas can be exchanged with like- minded people which can go a long way.

What piece of insight or advice would you offer for future students?

As intimidating as it might be, take that first stride to step out of your comfort zone! This city and QMUL have so much to offer. Research thoroughly as to why you want to pursue this degree, arrange your finances well in advance and once you’re sure this is the correct decision, make the move! LinkedIn is a great platform to connect with QMUL alumni to ask your queries!

What was your best experience of studying at CCLS, Queen Mary?

CCLS introduced me to qLegal which was extremely beneficial in honing my public speaking, presentation and soft skills! I got a chance to collaborate and work with people from different jurisdictions and I can most definitely say that I made friends for a lifetime!
