Sanctuary Bursary

The School of Law at Queen Mary offers the Sanctuary Bursary to support students who have experienced severe barriers in accessing higher education due to forced migration. Find out if you are eligible for the Sanctuary Bursary.

The Sanctuary Bursary aims to fund one enrolled LLB student on any of the three or four year LLB programmes each year, by offering a full tuition fee waiver and up to £16,000 per year to cover the cost of accommodation and additional living expenses. The Bursary is paid in instalments during the first year of study and a renewal application can be made for each subsequent year of study provided the renewal criteria is met.

I am honestly so grateful for the Sanctuary Bursary as it has given me the confidence to know that the Queen Mary School of Law believe in me and what I can achieve despite my background. The award has taken a huge financial weight off my shoulders, which was one of my main worries about attending university to study law.

Terms and Conditions 2023 Entry

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must fulfil the following eligibility criteria to be considered for the Sanctuary Bursary:

  • Have Refugee or Asylum Status, or Humanitarian Protection in any country as recognised by the 1951 UN Convention on the Status of Refugees (there is no restriction based on fee status) OR
  • Be from an area of instability or zone of conflict or have been at risk of discrimination, persecution suffering, violence, or other abuse of their human rights AND
  • Hold a conditional or unconditional offer of admission to the School of Law for 2023 entry into the first year of any LLB programme of three or four years in length (LLB Senior Status students are NOT eligible) AND
  • Be the first time entering a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent level of study). 
I am incredibly fortunate and grateful to be the first recipient of the Sanctuary Bursary. As an international student from an unstable, war-torn background, I struggled greatly when seeking funding for my degree as I realised that there were very few scholarships and bursaries that catered for people like me, who needed a great amount of assistance. The way the School of Law listened to my concerns and empathised with my personal situation really made me realise that I picked the best place possible for me to learn and grow as it was a true reflection of the values of the university as a whole. Receiving this bursary has been one of the most life changing experiences as I am now starting my second semester of my first year at Queen Mary.
