LGBTQIA+ History Month 2025 Events Programme

Here you can find details of all the events, activities and more taking place as part of LGBTQIA+ History Month 2025 at Queen Mary.

All are open to our staff and students to mark this important month, so please join us. We will be adding to and updating our listings throughout the month, so check back regularly!

LGBTQIA+ History Month flag raising event

Intersex Inclusive Progress Pride flagDate: Monday 3 February

Time: 1.00pm-1.30pm

Location: Outside the Queens' Building, Mile End

You are warmly invited to a flag raising ceremony marking the beginning of LGBTQIA+ History Month at this flag raising event. The Intersex Inclusive Progress Pride flag will be flown as a visible symbol of Queen Mary’s commitment to championing our LGBTQIA+ community.

QMOut Coffee Social

Location: Ground Café, Mile End

QMOut is Queen Mary's LGBTQIA+ Staff Network that connects staff who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Non-binary, Queer, Asexual (Ace) or those who identify with other marginalised sexual orientations and / or gender identities. The network is also open to allies of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Join QMOut for a coffee social to chat with colleagues, meet the network Co-Chairs and pick up a rainbow lanyard.

Whether you identify as LGBTQIA+ or are an ally, everyone is welcome to attend!

LGBTQIA+ History Month Pop-up

Have a chat with colleagues and members of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team and collect a rainbow lanyard and pronoun badge, to signify your commitment to providing a safe and comfortable environment for all of our LGBTQIA+ staff and students.

LGBTQIA+ Cancer Care with Dr Alison Berner

Join Dr Alison Berner (she/her/ella) as she discusses the issues faced LGBTQIA+ people with cancer and her research and clinical work to improve cancer care for the trans and gender diverse community.

Dr Alison May Berner (she/her/ella), BA Hons, MBBS, MSc, PhD, MRCP. Academic Clinical Lecturer, Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London

Photograph of Alison May BernerAlison is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Medical Oncology at Barts Cancer Institute, practicing clinically at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. She is the UK’s only oncologist to be dual trained gender identity medicine, and leads the UK Cancer and Transition Service (UCATS), a world first national clinic to integrate local oncology and gender affirming care or transgender and gender diverse people in the UK. Her research focusses on investigating the role of sex, gender and sexual orientation in cancer predisposition and outcomes. She is also Trustee of the OUTpatients LGBTIAQ+ cancer charity.

Science & Engineering Faculty Lunch

Location: Maths Common Room (Fifth Floor)

The Faculty of Science & Engineering are holding regular Faculty Lunches, as an opportunity for colleagues to get in contact with each other and share experiences, ideas and suggestions. The lunch being held during February has an open invitation for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies across the faculty to attend.

Discovering and enjoying great reads : An LGBTQIA+ History Month event

Time: 1.00pm-2.00pm for both events

Location: Online via MS Teams on Monday 17 February and in-person at Mile End Seminar Room on Wednesday 19 February. Staff can register for either event via the CPD Booking System. Students please register for either the online event or in-person event.

In this engaging workshop, James Soderman, Faculty Liaison Librarian for Science and Engineering, invites you to explore the vibrant realm of LGBTQIA+ materials within the Queen Mary Library collection.

Uncover fascinating stories, including the enigmatic figure known as the Goddess Bunny.

QMOut Pop-up event

Location: Graduate Centre foyer

The Co-Chairs of the QMOut LGBTQIA+ Staff Network are holding a pop-up at the Graduate Centre. Drop by the foyer to say hello, find out more about the network and meet other members. Those interested in becoming new members are very welcome to come along!

QMOut Panel Discussion

The QMOut LGBTQIA+ Staff Network will be hosting a panel discussion with members of Queen Mary's LGBTQIA+ community, focusing on the 2025 theme of LGBTQIA+ History Month, 'Activism and Social Change'.

Lunch and Learn: Pronouns Matter

Join Eleanor McDavis (EDI Manager, LGBTQIA+ Equality) (She/Them), Darren Hunwicks (EDI Officer) (He/Him) and Adam Khan (MA PT International Relations and President of QM LGBT+ Society, QM/BL Trans Representative) (they/xe), for a discussion about gender identity, what is a pronoun, why does using the correct pronoun matter and how members of the Queen Mary community can be good allies and show support for gender diverse staff and students.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Forum: LGBTQIA+ Inclusion

Date: Wednesday 5 March

Time: 1.00pm-2.30pm

Location: Online via MS Teams. Please complete this form to reserve your place. Registration closes Friday 28 February at 5.00pm.

All staff and students are invited to attend the next EDI Forum that will focus on LGBTQIA+ Inclusion.

The EDI Forum is a specially designed initiative, led by Queen Mary’s EDI Team, which aims to provide a platform for staff and students to discuss ideas, challenges, good practice, and concerns related to EDI. Recommendations put forward during the Forum will be collated and shared with Queen Mary’s EDI Steering Group for discussion and appropriate action.
