About the space

The 7th floor is comprised of:

  • Postgraduate Reading Room
  • Group Study Rooms 1 (GC705) and 2 (GC706)
  • Postgraduate Common Room and Terrace
  • Kitchen and gender neutral toilet facilities

The primary function of all four rooms is to provide a range of study environments for postgraduate students. Some of the spaces are bookable for other activities, for example, the Common Room is bookable for certain events where these support the study or development of postgraduate students. These events are kept to a minimum to reduce disruption to the normal access and use of the spaces.

Accessing the spaces in the evening and at weekends

Between 6pm and 8am on weekdays, and all day at weekends, entry to the Graduate Centre is via the accessible door to the left of the revolving doors. You will need to scan your Queen Mary ID card.

Food policy

During normal study use in all rooms, cold snacks, covered hot drinks and bottled cold drinks are permitted. Please be mindful of other users by clearing rubbish and food/drinks spills immediately. Hot food may only be consumed in the kitchen.

Postgraduate Reading Room

The Postgraduate Reading Room provides 24 individual study desks. The space is intended for quiet individual study only and noise should be kept to a minimum.

Group Study Rooms

Group Study Rooms 1 and 2 are designed for group working. There is space for a maximum of 8 people in each room and the rooms have a whiteboard and a digital screen with cables provided for laptop use. Access is controlled by Queen Mary ID card and is restricted to postgraduate taught and research students. The rooms are not bookable for staff meetings or undergraduate activities.

How to book

Bookings are for a maximum of 4 hours per group and require a minimum of 24 hours notice Monday to Friday, or 48-72 hours for bookings at the weekend.

Book using our LibCal booking system.

Postgraduate Common Room

The Postgraduate Common Room and Terrace provides comfortable relaxed seating for individual and social study. The adjacent kitchen is equipped with high top tables and a microwave. Booking for events is available where this supports postgraduate students via networking or learning activities, or for events managed through the Queen Mary Events Team on behalf of the Principal's Office.

The Terrace is closed during normal daytime use of the Common Room unless through specific arrangement with the Library (for example during booked events) and where the use is supervised. This is the result of a series of incidents, and an identified risk to personal safety.

During booked events through the Events Office, hot or cold catering provided by the institutional catering service is permitted so long as the catering is cleared away and the room returned to normal use as soon as possible at the end of the event.

How to book

  • Events booking is open to postgraduate students and staff arranging events that directly benefit postgraduate students. Some additional events are booked during evening hours only via the Events Team where these relate to the wider University.
  • Room capacity (including Terrace): 32
