If you are looking for support with your academic work, you can attend one of our in-person drop-in sessions in the Mile End Library. To find out more about the support we offer in these sessions, and when and where they run, please read the sections below.
In general, the support available in the drop-in sessions is split into three categories:
Academic Skills – this covers queries relating to reading, writing, preparing for exams, time management, and presentation skills.
Information Skills – this cover queries relating to finding resources, using databases, and referencing
Maths and Statistics – this covers queries relating to numeracy, maths, statistics, and data analysis.
Please note, not all these areas are covered in every session, so please see the “When and where are the drop-ins?” section for an up-to-date schedule.
The drop-in sessions run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2pm-4pm in the Seminar Room on the ground floor of the Mile End Library. Different support is available on different days:
Tuesday – Maths and Statistics
Wednesday – Academic Skills, Information Skills
Thursday – Information Skills, Maths and Statistics
A drop-in session is an unstructured session open to all students at the university. There is no need to book onto a drop-in, you can just turn up. In the session there will be an experienced adviser present, with whom you can discuss any issues or problems you are having with your academic work.
You can come along to any session you like and stay as long as you like. How you use the session is up to you. You might have a specific question in mind you want to ask the adviser, or you might just want a quiet space to work independently, knowing there is an adviser on hand for if/when you have an issue understanding something. Either way, we encourage you to bring along some tasks to work on whilst you're in the session, as the adviser may be busy with another student when you arrive and so you might have to wait to talk to them.
In general, we will not do work or solve problems for you, and we will not proofread your work. We will instead discuss your work with you to understand what the issues are, offer advice, and ultimately help you to do the work yourself.
