There are also the following specialist libraries relevant to Languages and Linguistics:
Canning House Library: The collection is one of the largest in the UK on Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries that is available to the general public. In 2012 the Canning House Library was transferred to King’s College London. The collections complement some 80,000 items held in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Historical Collection at King’s.
Goethe-Institut Library: 50 Princes Gate (Exhibition Road), London SW7 2PH (tel: 0207 596 4040). Useful library for German literature. Reference use of the Library is free; to borrow materials please see Lending Service.
Instituto Cervantes: 102 Eaton Square, London SW1W 9AN (tel: 0207 201 0757). The Queen Sofia Library contains more than 36,000 items with clearly differentiated sections: a resource centre for learning Spanish, sections for DVDs, CDs, History, Biography, Spanish and Latin American Literature. You can borrow items if you join.
Institute of Modern Languages Research: 29 Russell Square, London WC1B 4HS (tel: 0207 862 8967). The IMLR was formerly known as the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies; the Institute supports, promotes and facilitates research in Modern Languages (primarily French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese). Its collections form an important part of the Senate House Library’s foreign language and literature holdings.
