Academic Life: Attic Laboratory, c.1916
Although a women's College and founded on Christian principles, the courses initially offered included Mathematics and Botany as well as traditional arts-based 'femine' subjects. The reputation of the College grew and in 1902 it became a School of the University in the Faculty of Arts. Other subjects taught included Bible Classes, Divinity, and Citizenship. Intercollegiate learning was a large part of academic life, particularly for Science students, as Science subjects were not initially taught to final BSc. standard.
In 1961 Westfield became a School in the Faculty of Science and began to offer a range of Science degrees. During the 1980s, prior to the full merger with Queen Mary College, Westfield saw the transfer of its Science Faculty to Queen Mary College, Computer Science to King's College, and History of Art to University College London.
