Contemporary Events - War: St Peter's Hall, Oxford, taken in 1982
Throughout its history, Westfield College and its students have reacted to events taking place around them whether local, national, or international.
In Oct 1939, 157 students and 17 staff of Westfield College were evacuated to St Peter's Hall, in Oxford, a building which could only accommodate 90. Students had the benefit of attending Oxford lectures and use of the library facilities. They were also registered as undergradutes of Oxford University.
Women under the age of 19 1/2 on 1 Oct 1942 were allowed to remain at University for two academic years. Those above this age entered at their own risk and were liable to be called up for war-work. Most students had to complete their degrees in 2 years instead of 3.
