Levelling Up: Maths Launches 2025 Scheme

Supported by The London Mathematical Society and donor Dr. Tony Hill, "Levelling Up: Maths" offers online tutoring and comprehensive guidance on university applications. This initiative, specifically designed for Black heritage students, addresses underrepresentation of this group in STEM subjects at UK universities.

The scheme, first launched in February 2023, has made a substantial impact, providing resources and mentorship to students who may otherwise face barriers to accessing higher education. The programme's focus on Black heritage students reflects the University's commitment to fostering inclusivity and social mobility within academic communities.    

Dr Tony Hill, the founder of "Levelling Up: Maths," was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from Queen Mary, recognising his dedication to empowering young people. During the Night of Science and Engineering, Dr Hill expressed his gratitude, stating, "This wonderful university shares my dream – that every young person should fulfil their potential, regardless of their background. It means a lot to me personally because it comes from the UK leader in social mobility."    

The 2025 scheme will continue to build on the success of previous years, providing tailored support to students through: 

  • Online Tutoring: Regular online tutoring sessions led by passionate Black heritage Maths tutors, currently studying at Queen mary  
  • University Application Guidance: Expert advice and support throughout the university application process, helping students navigate the complexities of admissions
  • Mentorship and Community: Creating a supportive community where students can connect with peers and mentors
