Queen Mary University of London scores top marks for Mathematics in the 2024 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey.
The PTES, conducted by Advance HE, assesses the experiences of postgraduate taught students across the UK, covering aspects such as teaching quality, resources, and skills development.
The School of Mathematical Sciences at QMUL emerged as a standout performer, ranking 1st in the UK for the overall PTES score. This achievement solidifies Queen Mary’s reputation as a leader in postgraduate education in mathematics.
As well as ranking first in the UK overall, Queen Mary’s School of Mathematical Sciences attained perfect scores of 100% in the categories ‘Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of my course’ and ‘I am happy with the teaching support I received from staff on my course’. Scores of 95% or higher were recorded in numerous areas linked to teaching, student outcomes, learning materials and support.
The School of Mathematical Sciences' strong performance can be attributed to its emphasis on high-quality resources, robust academic support, and its inclusive community. These attributes align closely with the PTES survey themes, where QMUL has been working hard to enhance its standings.
Dr. Pedro Vergel, Director of Postgraduate Admissions and Senior Lecturer in Financial Mathematics, expressed pride in the School’s achievement:“These results are a confirmation that the core values of our School, our sense of community, and the effort of the whole team in supporting students through their postgraduate studies, have a direct positive impact on our students. Knowing that our students have not only gained valuable knowledge and professional skills, but they are happy and satisfied students is the best outcome for all of us”.
The School of Mathematical Sciences' outstanding performance in the PTES 2024 survey is a testament to its excellence in postgraduate education and a point of pride for the University. These survey results follow an excellent performance in the 2024 Graduate Outcomes Survey, where Mathematics graduates emerged as Queen Mary’s highest earners. For prospective postgraduate students considering a degree in Applied Mathematics, Data Analytics, Actuarial Science or Risk, QMUL offers an excellent blend of academic rigour, student-centric teaching, and strong support services.
