Queen Mary, University of London’s Department of Physics has been ranked second in London and seventh nationwide in The Guardian’s annual university guide, jumping eight places in a year.
Head of Physics, Professor William Spence, said: "We are pleased to see this recognition of the pride we take in our teaching standards and how we support our students.
"Our staff continue a long tradition of excellence in research in ground-breaking fields, which, combined with a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of student education, gives our graduates the best possible preparation for their future careers.
"The department is a member of the PASS scheme (Peer Assisted Study Support) whereby students in their second and third years provide mentoring to their younger counterparts. We enhance our graduates' career opportunities by providing paid summer internships at our research centres, other universities and industrial employers. Our new partnership with the South East Physics network (SEPnet) also extends the range of experiences we can offer.
"Competition for the very best students is intense however, and we will continue to improve upon what we offer our undergraduates."
In other subjects, Queen Mary was listed eighth for Drama (which came third in the Independent poll), ranked fifth in Politics and third in Law. The College overall was ranked 46th, up from 57th last year.
