Queen Mary, University of London played host to students, embassy officials and scholarship body representatives from around the world on Thursday 24 January at a reception celebrating the success of international students who received prestigious scholarships to study in 2013-14.
Over 100 scholars attended the event, alongside staff from the embassies of Brazil, Chile, China, Indonesia, Japan, Kurdistan Region, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United Arab Emirates. Representatives from Chevening and the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission and Queen Mary school and departmental staff also attended.
The Overseas Scholars’ Reception was organised by Queen Mary to bring this year’s scholars together and recognise the important contribution that they make to life on campus. Queen Mary is home to around 6,000 international students from over 100 different countries, with over 2,000 of these students studying in China on joint degree programmes offered with the university’s partner, the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.
The university is committed to working with a range of overseas partners, including overseas higher education institutions and funding bodies, to ensure that international students have access to the best possible educational, cultural and social experience at Queen Mary.

Shen Yang, Minister Counsellor (Education) from the Chinese Embassy, spoke at the event of the Chinese Embassy’s work with Queen Mary: “We are proud to work in partnership with Queen Mary, who have led the way in terms of transnational education. The launch of a new joint programme in Biomedical Sciences by Queen Mary and Nanchang University in China in September 2013 will see this partnership continue to grow.”
