Queen Mary University of London recently welcomed esteemed colleagues from academia and the healthcare industry at the MedTech World London Roadshow. The event follows the university’s successful participation at the Med-Tech World Summit in Malta in October 2023, where Queen Mary received the “Excellence in Digital Health Education” Award, and it underlines the university’s leading role in shaping the future of medical education and innovation.
The MedTech Roadshow in London is one of six MedTech Roadshow held across the globe that connect entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts to discuss the latest trends, innovations, and opportunities in the med-tech and digital health sectors.
The event was kicked off by Dr Dylan Attard, CEO of MedTech World, who emphasised the significance of fostering an entrepreneurial spirit within the medical field: “Supportive environments that nurture innovation and entrepreneurship are vital in advancing healthcare. As doctors, we need spaces that allow us to create and implement groundbreaking solutions, not just manage day-to-day tasks.”
Queen Mary University of London’s President and Principal, Professor Colin Bailey CBE, highlighted Queen Mary’s dedication to promoting entrepreneurship: “Queen Mary understands the crucial role of technology and innovation in our ongoing endeavour for progress – particularly in our medical education and hospital treatments. Queen Mary Innovation’s (QMI) current portfolio includes numerous active spin out companies at different stages of the business life cycle and across a broad range of industries. We also encourage student start-ups with our 33,000 students and have just launched a new initiative looking to support start-ups with a social purpose. This is led by Queen Mary in collaboration with eleven other UK universities.”
Professor Greg Slabaugh, Director of the Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI) at Queen Mary, gave insight into the latest research surrounding Multimodal AI and Digital Twins in Healthcare before an expert panel shared crucial advice for a successful start-up journey in the medical space, ‘From bench to bedside: Research-driven Investment in MedTech and HealthTech’.
At the heart of each MedTech Roadshow is a Start-up Pitch Competition that gives promising newcomers in the health tech sphere the opportunity to compete on stage. The lively competition saw London-based Lindus Health emerge victorious in a close-run contest with 5 other start-ups including Queen Mary Innovation start-ups Mebomine and Nilocas.
