Queen Mary University of London expands partnerships across Southeast Asia

The delegation held discussions with prominent leaders in Indonesia, including:

• Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of Indonesia
• Emil Elestianto Dardak, Vice Governor of East Java
• Professor Fauzan, Vice Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Technology
• Dr Rizal Edwin Manansang, Secretary General of the National Council for Special Economic Zone

 During the visit, the delegation engaged with universities in the region, including Bandung Institute of Technology, Brawijaya University  the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, and MAHSA University, exploring opportunities to collaborate. Queen Mary has already established more than 30 academic partnerships across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines Singapore and Thailand, and, securing over half a million pounds  in research funding for projects in sustainability, biomedical advancements, digital optimization, and energy resilience.

Reflecting on the significance of the visit, Professor Helen Bailey stated: "This trip was a powerful demonstration of Queen Mary’s commitment to the region, as we have been welcoming students from Southeast Asia for over 50 years. Our discussions have laid the groundwork for meaningful partnerships that align with regional priorities. These collaborations will create new opportunities for students, researchers, and academics, ensuring that Queen Mary continues to play a pivotal role in driving innovation, education, and economic development in this hugely significant part of the world."

Professor Helen Bailey and the delegation also hosted alumni receptions in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore, reconnecting with former students who are now leaders in academia, industry, and government, and form part of Queen Mary’s growing network of over 5,700 alumni across Southeast Asia.

“Our alumni are one of Queen Mary’s greatest strengths, and their achievements showcase the impact of our education. Meeting them in person was truly inspiring—many expressed a strong commitment to mentoring current students and supporting our strategic initiatives,” added Professor Bailey.

The delegation included Professor Richard Grose from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Professor Alex Clark from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Professor Dan Todman from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Lee Wildman, Director of Global Engagement, and Rachel Miles, International Executive Officer.
