Join the Mile End Institute and the British-German Association to explore the fallout of the German elections and what the results might mean for Britain's relationship with Germany and the future of European politics.

Since the Labour government came to office in July 2024, Sir Keir Starmer has stressed that Germany and the United Kingdom share a ‘strong friendship, common values and mutual interest’. In October, the two governments signed a ‘landmark’ defence partnership and work on a new bilateral cooperation treaty to demonstrate that Britain and the UK are ‘the closest of partners in Europe’ is ongoing.

With the collapse of Germany’s governing coalition in November 2024 and snap federal elections scheduled for 23 February, the Mile End Institute and the British-German Association have assembled a stellar panel to explore what the future holds for Anglo-German relations. We will be asking what the election results tell us about the future of German and European politics and what Germany’s new political landscape means for both Germany and the UK’s foreign policy.

Speakers:

Annette Dittert is a writer, columnist, filmmaker and reporter, who is the Bureau Chief and Senior Correspondent in London for the German television channel ARD. She is one of Germany and Britain’s most prominent commentators on German politics and was awarded ‘Political Journalist of the Year’ in 2019 for her reporting on Brexit.

Dr Canan Atilgan has been Head of the United Kingdom and Ireland Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung since October 2024. Prior to this, she has headed the Middle East and North Africa Division in the European and International Cooperation Department from May 2020.

Professor Dan Hough is Professor of Politics at the University of Sussex. He is an expert in German politics, Die Linke and the legacy of the GDR. He is the co-author of The Left Party in Contemporary German Politics (2007) and The Politics of the New Germany (2011), and regularly contributes to British and international media outlets.

The event will be chaired by Dr Sofia Collignon, the Director of the Mile End Institute and an expert in the study of candidates, elections, political parties and gendered violence against political elites. Sofia is a Senior Lecturer in Comparative Politics at Queen Mary and acted as an official election observer during the German Federal Election in February 2025.

This event will take place in the Maths Lecture Theatre in the Mathematical Sciences Building which is number 4 on this map of Queen Mary's Mile End campus. You can find it on What3Words here. Doors open at 6.10pm and we aim to start at 6.30pm.
