Neurodiversity Celebration Week - 17 - 23 March 2025
Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences.
We all experience and interact with the
world in a way that makes sense to us.
Neurodiversity highlights the idea that
there’s no one right way to think, learn,
behave or feel.
People think differently, which means we
can also utilise different ways to feel better.
With Togetherall, members can share their
experiences and share community.

Ramadan Mubarak!
We wish all those observing Ramadan a blessed and rewarding month!
Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, but it’s also important to take care of your health while fasting especially while studying. Here are a few tips on how to maintain your energy levels during Ramadan:
Suhur (pre-dawn meal) 🥘
The pre-dawn meal, Suhur, provides fluids and energy for the day of fasting ahead, so making healthy choices can help you to cope better with the fast. We recommend you eat nutritious foods that slowly release energy. Include carbohydrates like oats or wholemeal bread, along with protein sources such as eggs or yoghurt, to keep you fuller for longer.
Drink enough water as possible 💧
It is vital to stay hydrated to prevent headaches or drowsiness . Drink plenty of water between Iftar and Suhur to prevent dehydration. Aim for at least six to eight glasses of water and avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea as they can increase the risk of further dehydration.
Plan 📚
Plan your study time, coursework and revision as far in advance as possible, so you can schedule and organize your workload effectively. This will help you to keep on top of things without feeling too overwhelmed. Don’t forget to keep up with exercises. Light exercise after Iftar can aid digestion and prevent stiffness
Avoid unhealthy foods at Iftar 🍟 🍔
Break your fast with dates and water, followed by a light soup or salad before moving on to a balanced main meal. Avoid overeating or consuming too many fried and sugary foods, which may leave you feeling tired and sleepy.
Rest 🛌
With late-night prayers and early morning meals, sleep patterns can be disrupted. Try to maintain a consistent sleep routine and take short naps if needed to stay refreshed Ensure you are as well rested as possible.
We will be hosting two Iftars in collaboration with QMSU this Ramadan on 13 and 21 March. Please keep a look out on our Instagram page for further details!

Slide 2: Have you heard of La Sape🪡
La Sape (Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes) is a vibrant cultural movement originating in the Congo, where individuals express their identity through high fashion and avant-garde style. The movement is not just about clothing but also about asserting personal dignity, creativity, and social status. Rooted in colonial history and African resilience, La Sape has become a symbol of self-expression and resistance, celebrating the art of elegance and the joy of individuality.
#IDSC #poetry #HumanStories #LaSape #qmstudentlife Today is - Time to Talk Day!
Time to Talk Day is the nation’s biggest mental health conversation that falls on 6th February. It’s a day for friends, families, communities and workplaces to come together to talk, listen and change lives. The day is all about creating supportive communities by having conversations with family, friends, or colleagues about mental health. We all have mental health and by talking about it we can support ourselves and others.
Time to Talk Day is run by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, in partnership with Co-op and delivered by See Me with SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health), Inspire and Time to Change Wales. We want everyone to feel comfortable talking about mental health.
Time to Talk Day 2024 revealed that nearly two thirds of the UK public put on a brave face to avoid talking about their mental health. And nearly half of us are less likely to open up as we don’t want to worry others in already difficult times. But talking openly and honestly can be the first step towards better mental health for everyone. It can reduce stigma and help people feel comfortable enough to seek help when they need it.
That’s why this Time To Talk Day, we want everyone to get comfortable and start talking about mental health. Grab a mate and get talking!

World Cancer Day is an international day observed every 4 February to raise awareness about cancer, encourage its prevention, and mobilise action to address the global cancer epidemic. The day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and was established in the year 2000.
Each year, hundreds of activities and events take place around the world, gathering communities, organisations and individuals in schools, businesses, hospitals, marketplaces, parks, community halls, places of worship - in the streets and online - acting as a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in reducing the global impact of cancer.
#UnitedbyUnique #WorldCancerDay #qmstudentlifeToday is World Hijab Day - the theme for this year is #HijabisUnsilenced.
This theme celebrates the strength, resilience, and determination of hijabis who, despite facing stereotypes and prejudice, refuse to be silenced. It highlights the hijab as a symbol of empowerment, identity, and solidarity.
This global event invites people of all backgrounds to stand in solidarity with Muslim women who choose to wear the hijab and to challenge the prejudice and misconceptions they often face because of this choice.

South Asian culture has made a significant impact on Britain in various aspects, such as food, clothing, music, words, and the overall ambiance of our towns and cities. It’s a beautiful display of the rich and proud South Asian heritage that has blended into the British way of life, contributing to the diversity of our nation.

#qmstudentlifeToday is Nelson Mandela Day. It is an annual global celebration that takes place on 18 July to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.
This day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organisations to take time to reflect on Mandela’s values and principles and to make a positive impact in their own communities.
Nelson Mandela shows us the power of resisting oppression, of justice over inequality, of dignity over humiliation, of forgiveness over hatred.
Let us recall the lessons of Nelson Mandela’s life, and the essential humanism that guided him: “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

#qmstudentlifeVaping and some of it's effects on mental health:
Brain development
Vaping harms the part of the brain that controls attention, learning, mood and impulse control, all important skills whilst studying.
Sleep
Vape users are significantly less likely to have good quality sleep compared to their non-vaping peers
Anxiety and depression
There is a strong connection between people who vape and depression. Vape users are twice as likely to report having clinical depression compared to those who do not.

#qmstudentlife What is International Nurses Day?
Celebrated May 12th, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, International Nurses Day a day to recognize nurses around the world and celebrate their contributions to the nursing profession. Each year has a theme, and the theme for 2024 is: Our Nurses. Our Future.
#InternationalNursesDay2024Preparing for exams- some useful tips:
Good revision practises
When it comes to exam preparation, good revision hygiene and practices are key. It limits stress and pressure, boosts confidence, and allows you to plan your revision in the best and easiest way for you.
1. Have a revision plan - With a revision plan, students take accountability for their learning, significantly reduces stress.
2. Find the best way you revise - Revision is personal, not a one-size-fits-all. Do you like to revise with other people? Do you need complete silence?
3. Don’t forget self-care - Exams can be mentally exhausting, so it is important to take the time for self-care in-between preparation and revision.
Night before the exam
1. Go to bed early
2. Know the details on the exam
3. Take your mind off things -It’s good to have a quick scan over your notes the night before, however, it is vital that you give yourself some time for headspace and switching off.
Morning of the exam
1. Take deep breaths
2. Stay hydrated and have a good breakfast
3. Remember, you can only do what you can do.
Worrying and stressing about an exam will not help and it might cause you to go into a blind panic. Having anxiety or feeling stressed can inhibit function and interfere with skills that are required for good performance.
If you have put the effort in by sticking to your plan and revising, you should have nothing to worry about. If you don’t do as well as you’d hoped, it won’t be the end of the world, even if your mind says it is.

Physical activity eases stress, lifts mood, improved self-esteem, increases cognitive function, and boosts a healthy lifestyle. All this improves a person’s ability to cope with mental health challenges, alleviating symptoms, and encouraging mental clarity.
3. Prioritise sleep
Getting enough sleep is closely linked to improved mental health. Having less sleep is connected to mental health challenges, such as anxiety and depression, and can even make mood disorders harder to cope with.
During sleep the brain processes emotional information, assesses memories and thoughts, and the lack of sleep can be damaging to cognitive functions.
4. Learn about your mental health.
Having self-awareness around your own mental health is freeing. It supports us in understanding why we feel the way we do when challenges come up. It allows us to appropriately comfort ourselves when we are distressed or struggling, such as coping with stress and burnout.
5. Manage your time
Many students feel pressure when they think they don’t have enough time to complete a piece of work or project and sometimes things don’t always go to plan.
It is vital to time management effectively, to offset pressured, stress, and potentially burnout.
