Journey to Higher Education

Queen Mary is pleased to provide a series of webinars and student panels to support you with your journey to higher education  

Registrations for our new webinars for 2025 are now live!

Our online series of webinars and student panel events aims to support you through the different stages of the application process.

Each session will provide you with information and practical tips to guide you through your journey to higher education. You will get the chance to hear from current Queen Mary students who have been through it all before.

Parents and Carers you will notice specific sessions to help you support your young person throughout their journey to higher education but please feel free to also register for sessions aimed at students.

Below is a list of upcoming webinars and student panels. Feel free to book onto multiple sessions via the registration link listed in the description.

Teachers and advisers are very welcome to attend but are unable to book on behalf of a student or group of students.

Understanding Student Finance and Budgeting

Wednesday 29 January 2025, 4.30 - 5.30pm (GMT)

This session will provide an overview of student finance as well as ways on how to budget and manage your finances whilst at university.

This session will cover:

  • Student Finance England
  • Different types of loans
  • What support you could be entitled to
  • How to apply
  • Understanding repayments
  • Tips on how to budget 

We will also be joined by current Queen Mary students who will share how they budget and answer any of your questions about student finance. 

This session is aimed at students applying to September 2025 entry.

Degree Apprenticeships Q&A Panel

Wednesday 12 February 2025, 4.30 - 5.30pm (GMT)

Join us in this online Q&A about Degree Apprenticeships 

Hear from a wide range of professionals and experts who work with Degree Apprenticeships including those who have taken part in Degree Apprenticeship programmes. 

We will answer common questions as well as questions from the audience

This session is aimed at year 12 and 13 students

Parents and Carers - Understanding Student Finance 

Wednesday 26 February 2025, 6.00 - 7.00pm (GMT)

Join us in this webinar as we provide you with an overview of Student Finance for students and how you can support your young person during their Student Finance application. 

We will cover

  • Student Finance England
  • Different types of loans
  • Understanding what support your young person could be entitled to
  • How students apply and how you can support their application 
  • Understanding what information you will need to supply 
  • Repayments after graduation

This session is aimed at parents and carers who are supporting young people in year 12 or 13. Please note figures discussed in the webinar will be specific to September 2025 entry but much of the information will be valuable to parents of younger students too.

Humanities and Social Science Alumni Panel 

Tuesday 4 March 2025, 6pm - 7pm (GMT)

This session will be a chance for to hear from Queen Mary alumni who studied a range of Humanities and Social Science subjects over the years. 

We will cover

  • What they currently doing
  • Where a Humanities and Social Science degree can get you 
  • How a Humanities or Social Science degree helped them get to where they are now
  • Looking back on their studies at Queen Mary
  • Share tips and advice on how to make the most of your time at university
  • Insight into the world of work and their industries

Wednesday 5 March 2025, 6pm - 7pm (GMT)

This session will be a chance for to hear from Queen Mary alumni who studied a range of Science and Engineering subjects over the years. 

We will cover

  • What they currently doing
  • Where a Science and Engineering degree can get you 
  • How a Science and Engineering subject  helped them get to where they are now
  • Looking back on their studies at Queen Mary
  • Share tips and advice on how to make the most of your time at university
  • Insight into the world of work and their industries

Medicine and Dentistry Alumni Panel

Thursday 6 March 2025, 6pm - 7pm (GMT)

This session will be a chance for you to hear from Queen Mary alumni who studied Medicine or Dentistry over the years. 

We will cover

  • What they currently doing
  • The process of training after graduating
  • Their experience as a doctor/dentist
  • Looking back on their studies at Queen Mary
  • Share tips and advice on how to make the most of your time at university
  • Insight into the world of work

Understanding Medical and Dental Work Experience

Wednesday 19 March 2025, 4.30 - 5.30pm (BST)

This webinar will give you the opportunity to find out what you can do to help you improve your understanding of medicine and dentistry which is crucial to the application process, we will cover:

  • How you can get work experience/shadowing/volunteering
  • How to make the most of these opportunities
  • The other things that you can do to support your application. 

We will joined by current Queen Mary students who will share their experiences of medical/dental work experience and volunteering and answer any of your questions.

Introduction to UCAS and the application process

Wednesday 2 April 2025 - 4.30- 5.30pm (BST)

In this session, we will introduce you the UCAS application process including important dates and what to include in your application 

We will cover:

  • What is a UCAS application 
  • What you need to include in your application 
  • Tips on how to make a strong application 
  • Different factors you need to consider when completing your application

We will be joined by current Queen Mary students and hear their tips on applying via UCAS and how they got a place at QMUL.
