From Linux Labs to Libraries

Graduate centre with views over LondonAs a postgraduate student, you will have access to specialist teaching and research facilities, working alongside established researchers in your chosen field. A brand new £39m Graduate Centre opened in early 2017 at our Mile End campus and provides excellent teaching and learning spaces for all postgraduate students including an exclusive rooftop common room. In addition, our G.E. Fogg building, the home of our biosciences and psychology students, recently underwent a £4.5 million refurbishment.

You will have access to the Linux computer lab as well as Apocrita, our high performance computer facility, which you will use when you study the Genome bioinformatics module taught by Dr Yannick Wurm. When it comes to study space, you’ll have plenty of options – Queen Mary has three libraries across its four London campuses. The largest is located at Mile End, where you’ll be based, and is open 24/7 during the academic year. The Mile End library has a mix of group study and individual study areas, as well as PC rooms and contemplation spaces. It offers a range of services, including free laptop loans and secure charging boxes. In addition to this you can make use of Think Pod – an interactive collaboration space with presentation, recording and video conferencing facilities.

Genomics laboratory with machinery and petri dishesThe Genomics facility provides the latest genomic technologies including highthroughput sequencing tools. These can be used to investigate genomes, epigenomes and transcriptomes of any organism. The facility has an experienced, dedicated team and can advise on the design and analysis of experiments.

We have specialist analytical, mesocosm and temperature-controlled research facilities within our Centre for the Aquatic and Terrestrial Environment, developed from an investment of £1.8 million. As well as this, some of our academic staff are based at the Freshwater Biological Association’s River Laboratory on the River Frome in Dorset and its research facilities are available for use by our students. We will also use our network of partner NGOs, research labs and industries to create further opportunities for projects.
