Programme overview

Our Biomedical Science (Medical Microbiology) programme at the Blizard Institute is a well-respected course and we have been accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science since our first intake of students in 2013.

This programme has been designed to give you an in depth understanding of all aspects of medical microbiology and associated topics such as antimicrobial therapy, infection control in the hospital and public health. It includes carefully planned content to cover both clinical and laboratory aspects of diagnosing infectious disease as well as a strong foundation in host-microbe pathogenesis, infection control, public health, and antimicrobial therapy. You will develop a systematic understanding and a critical awareness of current problems and new insights. Through the tools taught on this programme, you will be able to evaluate current research and advanced scholarship in medical microbiology, evaluate methodologies and develop critiques of them and, where appropriate, propose new hypotheses. You will also benefit from years of continuous improvement informed by the needs of our students.

A major draw of this programme is the opportunity to study and receive hands-on training in a purpose-built laboratory, which is based on a routine clinical microbiology laboratory. Your practical classes are designed to give you invaluable hands-on experience, particularly in basic clinical microbiology. You will also be encouraged to relate current workplace practices to your studies, discuss and critically evaluate these techniques with class members, and undertake an active role in independent study outside of the classroom. In addition to lectures and workshops we consider the practical classes an important component of the course as these are designed to give you hands-on experience, particularly in basic clinical microbiology.

Additional theoretical tutorials are also used throughout the year to broaden your experience of biomedical science. These tutorials include case presentations to and by students, workshops, discussion groups, question-and-answer sessions, and oral presentations. Full-time students can also attend regular clinical journal clubs at Barts Health NHS Trust and research meetings within the Centre of Immunobiology.

You will have the opportunity to undertake a relevant research project within the Blizard Institute or Barts Health NHS Trust, benefitting from the support and guidance of our hugely experienced supervisory academic team.
