qLegal and its offering

Technology is fundamentally changing the way work and legal services are carried out. Many businesses and legal practices have yet to adapt to the new reality of this, the Fourth Industrial Revolution. So how can you gain the skills and experiences to achieve your careers goals in this new world?

Illustration of a lightbulb surrounded by graphs on a white brick wallqLegal is the answer.

We are a simulation of an innovative commercial law firm within CCLS. Working closely with top international firms who are themselves spearheading change, we understand what employers are looking for and the attributes they want in their recruits. To succeed in the future of law, you will need to demonstrate a range of personal attributes on top of the excellent legal knowledge and key professional skills developed through our postgraduate programmes and specialist careers team.

Students engage in the same activities that professional lawyers engage with in practice and so learn by doing.

qLegal’s services are free and students and external partners are volunteers. Clients - start-ups, SMEs and entrepreneurs - are real, and the standards to which qLegal operates are high.

We work with a variety of partners including law firms, accelerators, colleges and innovative companies. Some of our partners include Google, Bank of America, Tower Hamlets, Visa and Bloomberg.

Our Programmes

We offer three distinct programmes, each offering a unique opportunity to grow and develop your skillset while supporting early-stage entrepreneurs. If you get through the competitive selection process you will undergo comprehensive training throughout October, tailored to your programme.

  1. Future of Law – You will work in a team to provide an innovative solution to meet your client’s brief. This could mean delivering a workshop, producing a user-friendly legal resource, or developing Legal Design skills as you create prototypes within an interdisciplinary team. Projects prepare you for the future of legal practice, under the guidance of qLegal and external lawyers.
  2. Externships – You will provide practical support to a tech business or start-up, one day a week for six months, to grow your legal and commercial acumen. You will be supported throughout and attend peer coaching sessions every two weeks. The sessions are led by qLegal and based on a weekly theme relating to law, business, and general commercial awareness.
  3. Legal Advisory – Working in pairs, you will provide written legal advice to your client. You will be reviewing the initial case summary, interviewing your client, researching the legal and business aspects of your client's issue, incorporating feedback from a qualified solicitor supervising your case, and delivering the final letter of advice.

My time at qLegal has been one of the highlights of my LLM this year. The experience has taught me how to effectively communicate complex legal advice to a client in a clear and easy to understand manner. Working with my fellow students, supervisors from top internationally recognised law firms and the qLegal team has been an enjoyable experience and has allowed me to develop key skills which any aspiring solicitor would want to learn.
