Lab work is integral to chemical sciences, and we provide exceptional facilities which support and enhance your practical learning and which will give you a taste of taste of the sort of environments you could be working in after university.
The Joseph Priestley building is the home to our Chemical scientists. We recently invested £5.2 million into its refurbishment and a new teaching lab. The result is a cutting-edge learning space with 30 fume cupboards, a new teaching zone and benching for modern equipment.
You’ll find the design is based on that in commercial laboratories, meaning you’ll have an extra layer of preparation for the next stage of your career. The refurbishment is all part of a campus-wide renovation of vital facilities, including our new £39m Graduate Centre which opened in 2017. The centre provides excellent teaching and learning spaces for all postgraduate students including an exclusive rooftop common room.
Depending on the project you choose, you will have access to many advanced level facilities, including 600MHz NMR, cryo-EM, a supercomputing facility and X-ray facilities which allow you to characterise the structure of a compound. There is also a Mass Spectrometry lab, which provides a range of analytical tests including structural analysis of small molecules, protein identification, sequencing of peptides and proteins, lipidomics and metabolomics analysis, and absolute and relative quantification of biomolecules in complex matrices. When it comes to study space, you’ll have plenty of options – Queen Mary has three libraries across its four London campuses. The largest is located at Mile End, where you’ll be based, and is open 24/7 during the academic year. The Mile End library has a mix of group study and individual study areas, as well as PC rooms and contemplation spaces. It offers a range of services, including free laptop loans and secure charging boxes.
