Programmes in the School of Engineering and Materials Science are developed by our academics who are experts in their field and informed by our cutting-edge research and Industrial Advisory board.
Professor Vassili Toropov is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Chair of Division of Aerospace Engineering and Fluid Mechanics. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), as well as being involved in multiple committees and working groups across the industry. Prof Toropov is an expert in the development of design optimisation techniques for large-scale engineering problems. He collaborates with many industrial and educational partners including; Rolls Royce, Airbus, Docklands Light Railway Altair Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover, Parket Hannifin, TU Delft and Hiroshima University. Professor Sergey Karabasov is a Professor of Computational Modelling, Deputy for Research & Industrial Engagement (Division of Aerospace Engineering and Fluid Mechanics), Chair of Computing Committee and Chair of Taught Postgraduate Subject Examination Board. His research is devoted to high-resolution and multiscale modelling in computational aero and hydrodynamics. In aeroacoustics, his research is in sound generated by aerodynamic flows such as jet noise. Prof Karabasov’s pioneering research has attracted more than $3.5m research funding.
Dr Fariborz Motallebi is a Senior Lecturer in Aerodynamics, Aerospace Programme Director, Academic Manager of Whitehead Aeronautical Laboratory and Chair of the Postgraduate Degree Examination Board for Faculty of Science and Engineering. Fariborz Motallebi's field of research covers experimental aerodynamics, which includes flow control, high-speed flows, wake flows, flow visualisation and application of model instrumentation. He is currently collaborating with the Defence Research Agency (Bedford) on the control of shock-induced separation by SBVG. Fariborz Motallebi is also collaborating with an experimental research group in the Aerospace Department at Delft, in the Netherlands.
