Moving to the UK as an International Student

We spoke to MSc Data Analytics student, Mrunmayee, about moving from India to the UK to study at Queen Mary.

How did you prepare for your move to the UK?

Preparing for my move to the UK involved extensive research and planning. I did A LOT of research focusing on both practical and emotional aspects. I looked at finance, living situations, local area and surroundings, best unis for my desired course, fee structure and modules offered. It also included making the difficult decision to leave my family and friends behind and move miles away from home. (tho one can never prepare themselves for something like this I tried)!!

What information did Queen Mary provide about moving to the UK?

Queen Mary definitely provided me with all the necessary information about moving to the UK. This included how to apply, visa requirements and conditions, documents required and university accommodation. They also informed me about the open days that take place and offered information about scholarships and funding.

How did the school help you settle in?

The School of Mathematical Sciences made sure I knew what was happening and what my next steps were. I received regular emails from the School to keep me up to date, which included information about enrolment. Everyone in the Maths office is very helpful and always just a call or email away!

What is the student community like at Queen Mary?

As an international student at Queen Mary University of London, I've found the student community to be incredibly diverse and welcoming. The student community is one of my favourite things at QMUL. It offers a lot of diversity making it very vibrant, informative and fun. With students from over 160 countries, the campus has a lively global atmosphere and is always bubbling with laughter and good vibes. Not to mention the university offers numerous clubs and societies, catering to various interests and helping international students connect. The Students' Union organizes events and support services specifically for us, which has been invaluable in settling in. Academically speaking, the diverse perspectives in class discussions enrich the learning experience. One gets to interact with people from all over the world with different backgrounds. While adjusting to London life can be challenging, the friendly community at Queen Mary has made it feel like a home away from home.

What advice do you have for incoming international students coming to Queen Mary?

As an international student who's been through the experience, I'd recommend getting involved in campus life from day one. Join societies that interest you and attend international student events to make friends quickly. Don't be shy about asking for help - the university has great support services and everybody is really helpful. Explore London and the UK when you can, it's a fantastic opportunity and a very lively beautiful city and country to explore. It will get difficult at times but try to balance your studies with socialising and cultural experiences. Be open to new perspectives and cuisines from your diverse peers. Don’t ever give up on your hopes and dreams, don't forget to stay connected with home, but also allow yourself to fully immerse in your new environment. Enjoy the journey, I promise it will be one of the most memorable.
