The Barts Cancer Institute (BCI) was created in 2003, and brought together some of the most eminent cancer research teams in London, with one overriding objective, which is to ensure that the research conducted here is relevant to and will impact on cancer patients.
Our programmes are taught by experts in the field in an innovative learning environment that offers you an exceptional learning experience, exposure to modern techniques and state-of-the-art laboratories at our Charterhouse Square campus, so you can further your understanding, research and career development in the field of cancer.
Most of our MSc programmes are also available for intercalating MBBS Medicine students
Our MSc/PGDip Cancer programmes cover subject areas in molecular biology, pathology of cancer, methods of cancer treatments and therapies, cancer pharmacology, prevention and screening, diagnostics, genomics and data science as well as comprehensive Research Skills.
We offer 3 lab-based programmes that include a 12-week Lab or Research Project and two non-lab based programmes which culminate in a 12-week dissertation.
All programmes are available to study on campus or online.
You’ll discover how the treatment and diagnosis of cancer has advanced and how new therapies are developed, evaluated and implemented. You’ll also gain strong practical skills with a research skills module and a three-month laboratory project.
During your laboratory project, you’ll be fully integrated into one of the Institute’s six research centres, gaining valuable scientific and transferable skills. You’ll also gain experience of the research process – including preparation of a thesis – so you’ll have a solid foundation for a future career in scientific research.
This MSc will give you a theoretical and practical knowledge of modern molecular technologies as applied to human disease, with a focus on cancer. You’ll also learn how to apply and interpret advanced molecular technologies and use them in pathology.
At the heart of the course is a focus on developing your skills in the laboratory, as well as a variety of other scientific and transferable skills. You’ll equip yourself with the tools to follow a career in academic research, either in the clinical, pharmaceutical or diagnostic setting.
This MSc gives you an understanding of the scientific principles underlying oncology including development and use of drugs and treatments, and clinical research skills. This will enhance your career prospects in many areas of cancer research.
You’ll also take a three-month dissertation under the supervision of one of our research experts. This may involve setting up a ‘mock’ clinical trial to gain experience of clinical research and drug development in the cancer setting.
This MSc gives you a thorough grounding in the scientific principles underlying cancer treatment.
You’ll discover how new treatments are developed, evaluated and implemented. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped with a thorough knowledge of cancer biology and pathology, research methodologies, drug development, and regulatory issues.
You’ll understand the use and evaluation of cancer therapies, that will enhance your career prospects in many areas of cancer research, including early phase clinical trials.
This programme will teach you state-of-the-art analytic workflows and allow you gain hands-on experience with a wide range of real-life cancer and medical data, so that you will be ready to meet research and industry needs after graduation.
If you choose the MSc, you'll also complete a substantial individual research project to expand your analytic skills and research experience. During this project, you will conduct a novel piece of bioinformatics and computational work, typically within an active research group either within BCI, Queen Mary or at a partner organisation.
This programme is designed to fill the gap between research and employment demands and student training, offering up-to-date modules focusing on “big-data” analyses and enabling these through use of high-performance computing, together with cutting edge research projects and practical training using real world cohort data.
