CRUK Centre of Excellence

CRUK awards centre status to locations performing the highest quality cancer research and provides investment funding to develop that research

Together with the Centre for Cancer Prevention at Queen Mary’s Wolfson Institute of Population Health, Barts Cancer Institute (BCI) forms the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Barts Centre - one of 15 CRUK Centres of Excellence.

These are a network of 15 translational research centres delivering world-leading research that accelerates the transition of lab-based discovery to the clinic for the benefit of people affected by cancer.

Cancer Research UK centres drive local collaborations between universities, NHS hospitals, and other research organisations. Together, they operate as a network which plays a key role in delivering our strategic objectives in translational research, with different centres contributing their expertise in different tumour sites and research themes.

CRUK awards centre status to locations performing the highest quality cancer research, and we provide over £200m of infrastructure investment funding for technical staff, equipment, training and running costs, developing the breadth and depth of research at each of these centres.

The CRUK Barts Centre focuses on developing and maximising the impact of biological therapies, and using our expertise in cancer evolution and tumour heterogeneity to improve targeting of biotherapies. Each partner institute will contribute their different research interests and expertise in different tumour sites, accelerating trials and outcomes of research for cancers of unmet need in adults and children.
