Meet some of the leading academics who teach on our postgraduate degrees
Dr Michael Page is a Senior Lecturer in Medical Education. He is an experienced head of education with a demonstrated history of working in medical education. Dr Page is skilled in Medical Education, Leadership Development and Quality Improvement. He is a strong consulting professional with a PhD focused on Education, Medical Education, Assessment and Professional Learning. Michael is also qualified and experienced in educational management and leadership.
Dr Elspeth Alstead is a Reader in Clinical Education and Honorary Consultant Gastroenterologist at Queen Mary University of London. She consults at several hospitals in London and has contributed to a number of publications about medical education and gastroenterology.
Dr Arunthathi Mahendran is the Programme Director for the MSc Physician Associate Studies. She is responsible for all aspects of the programme: from leading and managing the 15-member faculty to designing and implementing the pedagogical approach to medical education.
She is also a practicing transplant surgeon (kidney/liver/pancreas) having trained at the Royal Free Hospital in London and the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University in New York, Manhattan. She is a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Transplant Surgeon at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel with specialist skills in living donor laparoscopic surgery. Dr Mahendran has a PhD in Education and her research examines professional learning and practice in clinical environments - she was the winner of the 2018 British Educational Research Association (BERA) Doctoral Award. She has written articles on this subject area and her book entitled, ‘Moments of Rupture: The Importance of Affect in Medical Education and Surgical Training, Perspectives from Philosophy and Professional Learning' was published by Routledge in 2019.
Professor Danë Goodsman is a Professor in Medical Education. A fully qualified educationalist, she has worked as a teacher and lecturer in all sectors from schools through to universities - specifically in the field of medical education since the early 1990s.
Her main areas of responsibility are Prehospital Medical Education, Faculty Development and Curriculum Innovation.
She co-directs the MSc Prehospital Medicine, which is run in partnership with the Institute of Prehospital Care (IoPHC) at London’s Air Ambulance, a world leader in the field of prehospital medicine. She is also a member of the Faculty of Prehospital Care at the College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Professor Goodsman has written and contributed to a number of research publications in the areas of prehospital medicine, medical, dental and inter-professional education.
Dr Gareth Grier is the Clinical Director and Education Lead at The Institute of Prehospital Care at London’s Air Ambulance. He currently develops and leads the Institute’s education, research and medical strategy. Dr Grier has published on the use of hi-fidelity scenario training in prehospital medicine education. He is a consultant with London’s Air Ambulance, and a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Pre-hospital Care at Barts Health NHS Trust at The Royal London Hospital.
