I was blessed with an opportunity to learn an extremely diverse range of topics across the theoretical physics spectrum and the MSc gave me an opportunity to give me a feel for what area of physics I liked best. The course has given me a solid foundation in theoretical physics and has given me the confidence to approach unsolved problems. I am now a PhD student at the Institute of Cosmology. — Sam Lawrence, MSc Theoretical Physics, 2017
Work at the forefront of research in theoretical physics and answer some of the deepest questions about the nature of the world around us. This MSc gives you a specialist overview of key topics and is taught by some of the UK’s leading string theorists from Queen Mary’s Centre for Research in String Theory.
The expertise you gain will make you a future physics pioneer. This programme gives you a comprehensive understanding of the field, covering topics such as supersymmetric field theories, string theory and quantum field theory, while also keeping you up-to-date with the very latest developments in research. You’ll also gain expertise in advanced mathematical techniques and their applications in theoretical physics.
Structure
The programme consists of eight taught modules and a research project. You’ll develop a sophisticated understanding of research methodology and how to manage your own research, making use of journal articles and other primary sources. You will start with a compulsory module in Relativistic Waves and Quantum Fields and will be able to select elective modules based on your interests – we have over 40 modules available for you to choose from. Some of the most popular and relevant modules for MSc Theoretical Physics include: Advanced Quantum Field Theory, Differential Geometry in Theoretical Physics and Practical Machine Learning.
