Profile

Dr. Oyesola Ojewunmi is a Senior Research Fellow in Genomics at the Precision Healthcare University Research Institute (PHURI), Queen Mary University of London, UK. He’s working in the Genomics Diversity group led by Prof. Segun Fatumo. His current work uses advanced methods to address genetic heterogeneity in genome-wide association meta-analysis of diverse populations and fine-mapping, particularly in African individuals. His research also delves into sickle cell disease, investigating genotype-phenotype correlations that integrate multi-omics datasets to unravel markers and pathways with biological and clinical relevance. Before this role, he worked as a Research Fellow in Genetic epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London, UK.

During his postdoctoral fellowship at King's College London, Dr. Oyesola Ojewunmi led a ground-breaking genome-wide association study of fetal haemoglobin in Nigerian patients with Sickle Cell Disease. His exceptional contributions in this role resulted in well-deserved awards and distinctions.

Oyesola's research expertise spans hands-on wet lab-based experiments to statistical genetic analyses. Furthermore, his commitment to the academic community is evident through his active involvement in teaching, where he imparts knowledge and guidance to undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is also committed to genomics capacity building for young African scientists and is a Review Editor for Frontiers Haematology.
