Profile

Dr Tomoko Nakanishi is a clinical lecturer in genomics at Queen Mary University of London’s Precision Healthcare University Research Institute (PHURI), supported by the prestigious Royal Society Wolfson Visiting Fellowship. She earned her M.D. from Kyoto University and completed clinical training in respiratory medicine before obtaining a Ph.D. in Human Genetics through the McGill-Kyoto International Collaborative School in Genomic Medicine. Her Ph.D. research focused on the genetic determinants of respiratory diseases, particularly the genetic risk factors contributing to COVID-19 severity. Dr. Nakanishi has been a key contributor to global genetic research efforts, including the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative.

Her current research interests include large-scale proteomic analyses, such as proteome-wide quantitative trait loci (pQTL) mapping and proteomic prediction of disease risk. Dr. Nakanishi’s work uses pQTL studies to explore how genetic variations influence protein levels, identifying potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for respiratory diseases. By integrating proteomic, genomic, and clinical data, she aims to develop more accurate disease prediction models for complex conditions such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), contributing to advancements in precision medicine.
