A Preview of the US Midterm Elections

When: Wednesday, November 2, 2022, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM
Where: QMUL Graduate Centre, Room 201 Mile End Road London E1 4NS, Mile End Campus

Speaker: Dr Richard Johnson

Two years ago, the Democrats won control of the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives. President Joe Biden has used this ‘trifecta’ to pass economic, environmental, and regulatory reforms. At the upcoming midterm elections, Democratic control of the House and Senate is in the balance. Traditionally, the president’s party loses seats in midterm elections. Will Republicans make gains, or can Democrats defy the historical trend? What would Republican control mean for the Biden agenda?

Dr Richard Johnson, Senior Lecturer in US Politics, will provide a preview of the 2022 US midterm elections. He will explain why the midterms matter, offer predictions of close elections, and discuss what the midterms could mean for President Biden’s agenda. Among other publications on US elections, he is a contributor to the book Midterms and Mandates: Electoral Reassessment of Presidents and Parties.

All SPIR students are welcome. Lunch will be provided.
