This week, Professor Tim Bale, the leading scholar of the mainstream right in Britain, and Cristóbal Rovira Kaltwasser, an expert on populism, have published a collection of studies under the title Riding the Populist Wave: Europe’s Mainstream Right in Crisis. Bale has long, and correctly, argued that the centre right is often ignored by academics who are more interested in the undoubted electoral problems of the mainstream left and the novelty of the radical right. He has set out to correct this.
