Finance (2 years) MRes

This programme is based in the School of Economics and Finance (SEF) on Queen Mary’s Mile End campus.

Programme structure

Structure

Applications for the September 2025 intake opens on 8th November 2024 and closes on 17th January 2025.

Places on this programme are limited. We will give equal consideration to all applications received by 17th January 2025. We may still accept applications received after this date but will not be able to offer a place if the programme is full.

Year 1: 120 credits

Semester A: Microeconomics I, Macroeconomics I, Econometrics I (all 20 credits each)
Semester B: Microeconomics II, Macroeconomics II, Econometrics II (all 20 credits each)

Year 2: 120 credits

Semester A: Foundations in Asset Pricing, Foundations in Corporate Finance (15 credits each)
Semester B: 1 of either Advanced Finance I, Advanced Finance II (15 credits each) and 1 from a choice of elective module (15 credits each)

Microeconomics I
This module, together with Microeconomics II, provides students with the fundamental training in microeconomics required to pursue independent research in this area. Microeconomics I covers consumer and producer theory; and general equilibrium.

Elective modules

Time Series Analysis
The module aims to provide a foundation in time series analysis in general and in the econometric analysis of economic time series in particular, offering theory and methods at a level consonant with an advanced training for a career economist. Topics include: An Introduction to Time Series Analysis for Econometrics and Finance; Linear Time Series Models; Seasonal Time Models; Estimation and Forecasting; Unit Roots and Co­integration; and ARCH and GARCH Time Series models.

Career paths

Most students graduating from this programme continue onto our PhD programme (subject to fulfilling requirements).

Those who do not pursue further studies, go onto a wide range of careers in the financial industry or public sector.

Entry requirements

UK

Degree requirements

A First Class Honours or above at undergraduate level in Economics, Finance or a related subject. Subjects such as Mathematics, Physics and Engineering may also be considered.

Other routes

We will also consider applications from MSc graduates in Economics and related disciplines, although it is not a requirement that applicants have completed an MSc.

Applicants already enrolled on a comparable advanced postgraduate degree at other institutions will be able to request to be considered through the Queen Mary Accreditation of Prior Learning Policy (following the standard University procedure) to enter part-way through the MRes programme.

Places will be allocated on a competitive basis - this means that meeting minimum entry requirement does not guarantee an offer of admission.

English language requirements

The English language requirements for our programmes are indicated by English bands, and therefore the specific test and score acceptable is based on the band assigned to the academic department within which your chosen course of study is administered. Note that for some academic departments there are programmes with non-standard English language requirements.

The English Language requirements for entry to postgraduate taught and research programmes in the School of Economics and Finance falls within the following English band:

Band 4: IELTS (Academic) minimum score 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each of Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking
