What you'll study

The pre-masters programme is suitable for students who wish to change academic direction, or who have not met the criteria for direct entry onto their chosen masters programme. The pre-masters provides training in business topics, as well as academic English and skills training, and will help you to deepen your knowledge of marketing.

Year 1

Students will receive an introduction to topics in business and management and explore some contemporary issues in this field. They will choose one elective from: politics, film or a language (where available). (4 classroom hours per week per subject)

They will also undertake an intensive programme in academic English and research skills in order to attain the levels required at Masters level. (12-14 hours per week)

Upon successful completion of the Pre-Masters programme, you will be required to meet specific progression requirements before progressing onto the second year of this programme.

The progression requirements are: 

  • 60% in Introduction to Business & Management and Contemporary Issues in Business and Management modules*
  • 50% in second module option*
  • 55% in the English Language and Study Skills module (semester 1&2)
  • 55% in the Humanities and Social Sciences Independent Research Project module

*This grade percentage applies to semester 2 modules although at least a pass of 40% must be attained in semester 1 modules for progression.

Year 2

This programme aims to teach you to:

  • Identify, analyse and evaluate marketing problems and plan, design, and recommend solution strategies.
  • Plan and conduct research through independent study.
  • Develop a sound understanding of contemporary business and organisational contexts.
  • Apply theories, models and frameworks to aid decision making within organisations.
  • Apply your knowledge to complex marketing issues, to improve management and marketing practice.

Assessment

  • You will be assessed using a mixture of formal examinations and coursework in your taught modules.
  • If you choose to complete a traditional dissertation, you will engage in more self-directed work to produce an 8,000-word research project.

Dissertation

For your final dissertation, you have the opportunity to conduct in-depth, independent research. You can choose between an 8,000-word traditional dissertation or two 30-credit modules: the Capstone Project in Marketing and Fashion and Luxury Marketing. This allows you to tailor your learning experience to your academic and career interests.

Teaching

The School of Business and Management aims to provide a high-quality teaching and learning environment.

This programme's modules have been developed and will be taught by academics who are experts in their fields. You’ll have the opportunity to gain invaluable insight from industry speakers in guest presentations and talks.

You’ll be assigned an Academic Advisor who will guide and support you in both academic and pastoral matters, throughout your course.

Our lecturers also publicise their office hours, when they are available to give feedback and advice on coursework, on their online staff profiles.

Campus

Teaching is based at Queen Mary’s Mile End campus, one of the largest self-contained residential campuses in the heart of London’s East End.

We have invested £105m in new facilities over the past five years to offer our students an exceptional learning environment. Recent developments include the £39m Graduate Centre, providing 7,700 square metres of learning, teaching and social space.

The campus is 15 minutes from Central London by tube, where you will have access to many of the University of London’s facilities, such as the Senate House library.

The English Language requirements for entry to postgraduate taught in the School of Business and Management falls within the following English band:
