Inclusion/engagement workshop in music technology education and reflections and broader implications and social dinner for the network
In this workshop Dr Eddie Dobson will look at new research on engagement in music technology education, and possible implications for other STEM and STEAM disciplines.
In much of the Global North, the audio industries are serviced by a majority white, cis, able-bodied male workforce. Only 2.8% of producers in the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Chart have been women from 2012-2022.
In 2018 and 2021 Yorkshire Sound Women Network C.I.C. received two significant National Foundation of Youth Music grants to fund clubs for girls and gender minority youth. This grant included funding to research minority gender (past and present) experiences of music technology education, and a new set of resources for educators is about to be published.
Dr Dobson will share some of the insights from this study, and invite discussion with a particular focus on engagement, identity and the sociality of music technology education.
Biography: Dr Eddie Dobson is an academic, composer and sound designer based at The University of Huddersfield. Eddie is a National Teaching Fellow and Principle Enterprise Fellow and has delivered many workshops for girls, women and minority gender learners at all levels of practice and is set to be a Key Tutor on the 2024 Sound and Music In the Making summer school. Developing a portfolio of audio work, Eddie has delivered audio-post production services and sound design for film and television since 2019, including work for Ch4 and Audible. Their latest acousmatic piece was premiered at a CeReNeM Loudspeaker Orchestra Concert in Greenwich in 2023, and performed at Electric Spring Festival in 2024.

CS4FN was created in 2005 by Paul Curzon and Peter McOwan of the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. Since then the project has been helped by many people locally, most notably Gabriella Kazai, Jonathan Black, Chrystie Myketiak, Jo Brodie and Nicola Plant.
CS4FN's aim is to share the passion about all things to do with Computer Science and especially to show that it is an exciting subject that is great to learn about just for the fun of it. CSFN produce a free magazine twice a year, as well as a series of special booklets and have also produced magazines on Electronic Engineering and Audio Engineering and their links with computing. All are sent free to schools in the UK (over 20,000 copies per issue). Lots more articles also go on the website.
For Pride Month, you can take a look at their blog LGBTQ+ Computer Science Greats.

These workshops are held both in-person and remotely via Microsoft Teams; reserve your place via CPD Training.
