Apply for a Large Grant

The Centre for Public Engagement Large Grants are funded from Higher Education Innovation Funds allocated to the University by Research England to support and develop knowledge-exchange interactions between higher education and the wider world.

Because of this the scheme is designed to support activity that engages well-defined public audiences with the research, teaching or core business of Queen Mary and clearly demonstrates two-way engagement that provides a mutual benefit. As these projects are for larger sums of money than the Small Grants, projects are expected to be of a larger scope, scale, or legacy and contribute to meeting Queen Mary's strategic priorities

The CPE Large Grants are open for applications from Monday 23 September to Monday 4 November 23:59.

Application Information

Steps:

  1. Familiarise yourself with the Large Grants Guidance 2024-2025 [PDF 293KB]. We highly recommend you read this thoroughly.
  2. Consider whether you want to join one of the Grant Drop In Advice Sessions (see joining details below).
  3. Complete the Large Grants Application Form 2024-25 [DOC 299KB]
  4. Submit your completed application to publicengagement@qmul.ac.uk with 'Large Grant Application - Lead Applicant Name' in the subject line by Monday 4th November 2024 23:59. Late applications will not be accepted.

You will receive an email as confirmation of receipt. All applicants will be contacted by the week commencing 25th November 2024.

Due to the nature of the funding and purpose of the scheme, all applications to the CPE Large Grants must meet the following criteria:

  • A well-defined public audience is the main focus of the activity: this means students, academic colleagues, practitioners, or industry collaborators should not be the primary beneficiary of the activity although they can be involved
  • There is a clear link to research, teaching or the core business of Queen Mary University of London, and reference to how it contributes to meeting the institutions strategic priorities
  • The activity clearly demonstrates two-way public engagement and provides mutual benefit. In practice this means:
    • The activity has opportunities for conversation between the organisers and participants
    • Both the organisers and participants are impacted by the activity in some way and take these benefits away with them. Benefits might include knowledge, skills, insights/ideas, and perspectives.
  • The activity demonstrates an innovative approach to public engagement: how is it new for you, for your subject, or for the public engagement sector?
  • There are some indications as to how learning from the project will be shared with others

Applicants must be current staff or students at Queen Mary, with an end date no sooner than 1 August 2025. We welcome applications from staff and students at all career stages—and this is not used as a criterion in the selection process.

Lead applicants must be the individuals who will be responsible for delivering the project and subsequent reporting. External applicants are able to apply to the scheme as named co-applicants if collaborating with Queen Mary staff or students on a project.

However to assure that applications engage external publics with Queen Mary research, teaching, or services, all submissions must have at least one applicant based at the University who will be held responsible for assisting in the delivery of projects and reporting on outcomes.

Projects must complete their activities and associated spend by the end of the financial year on 31 July 2025.

The CPE will be running a number of Grant Advice Drop In Sessions over the forthcoming weeks. These will be held online on Teams. You do not need to register to attend, simply join in at any point in the meeting, staff from the CPE will be available to answer your questions. We will operate on a first come first served basis. Please bookmark the time in your diary.

If you cannot make any of the dates available, email publicengagement@qmul.ac.uk with your questions, if needed we can arrange a call.
